Here is a gun that you very seldom encounter. This is the version that is described on page 543 of the 9th addition of Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms. This is the gun that was made under contract for the state, or at the time Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. These guns were authorized by the state government under a legislative act of 1797. These guns are directly pattern after the French model 1763 Charleville musket. The specifications are basically the same as the US model 1798 contract guns. The state government authorized 20,000 muskets to be constructed for state militia use. Historians have been able to find contracts that total 19,000 guns but the actual delivery quantities are as of yet unknown. Flayderman lists 18 makers for these guns with this gun being produced by the firm owned by Peter Brong (or Brang) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He states that Brong only contracted for 500 of these muskets. The lock plate is very crisply marked with the "CP" Commonwealth of Pennsylvania stamping behind the hammer. One thing that is special about this gun is that it is in the original flintlock configuration. Most of the time they were converted to percussion later on but this one is as it left the factory. On the inside of the lock it is marked "PB" for the maker Peter Brong. The barrel is full-length at 44-1/8ths inches. At the breech of the barrel left side of the breech marked with an oval cartouche with a liberty cap over "P", and "CB NO 334". The gun has all 3 of the original barrel bands intact as well both of the bell style sling swivels. The original ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel the stock of the gun has a gorgeous dark tone all over. Under the hammer the wood has a very well done modern repair that is mentioned for exactness. On the left side of the stock it is branded with "RT. NO. 116 CO. 4", with the letters "JF" carved into the stock just behind the side plate. This is fine looking gun from all angles that will display well on your relic room wall
