This is a beautiful Confederate cavalry saber made by the firm of Thomas Griswold of New Orleans. This is the cavalry officer version with the 35 inch blade. The blade is a well made blade with a dove gray color patina with a smooth attractive look on both sides. At the base of the blade it has the remnants of the coveted arched two line "THOMAS GRISWOLD" maker marking over the "NEW ORLEANS" production location mark. This is the marking from the Thomas Griswold firm of New Orleans, Louisiana. The guard and pommel cap are the classic Confederate style manufacture. It has the floral patterns on both pieces that denote the sword being of officer quality rather than being made for an enlisted man. The top of the pommel cap also has the blurred joint seam which is also a New Orleans trait. The handle has about 80% of the original leather hanging on as well as the entire double twist wire grip. This beauty is in the original scabbard. These swords have the distinctive brass scabbard. This one is in 100% complete condition with a spectacular look. The scabbard has the original drag intact as well as both of the mounts, rings and throat. On the side of the scabbard body, you can see the seam where it was joined together. This is another trait of an original Griswold cavalry saber. These scabbards dent very easily but this one is gorgeous. This sword and scabbard are fantastic by anyone's standards.
