This is a very scarce and very cool early American weapon! This is the scarce model 1808 contract musket. These were made by order of the U.S. Government because they were preparing for the threatening war with England. They are scarce because there were contracted with only 19 gun makers and only about half of their 85,200 that were ordered were ever delivered. This one has the clear maker's mark of the Barnett firm of Springfield, Massachusetts on the lockplate. According to Flayderman's guide who supplied the information above Bartlett had a contract for only 2,500 and only 1,700 of the guns were ever delivered. This one has the production date of 1812 deeply stamped behind the lockplate. The action of the lock functions on both of the positions. The gun is in the original flintlock configuration. The barrel is full-length at 44-3/4ths inches and it has the correct proof marks. At the breech by the nipple it has the "P M/IB 12"marking visible. The stock of the gun has a nice dark tone to the walnut that matches the light gray metal perfectly. On the front flat of the shoulderstock, it has the "JB" nicely carved into the wood. The ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel is the original that is just missing the threads on the end. The 2 sling swivels under the gun have been replaced and display well. This is a great looking old gun that very well could have fought the British in the War of 1812!
