Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a CDV image of a man that influenced the Civil War in a major way, United States Supreme Court Justice, Roger B. Taney (1777-1864). Taney was from Maryland and in 1835 he was nominated as chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was a plantation owner so he sided with the Southern States on the issue of slavery. in 1857, he delivered the majority opinion on the Dred Scott case. This case upheld that a slave was property no matter where they traveled in the U.S. This decision was one of the major causes for the Civil War. This style of CDV image was made by using an engraving printing plate to print the image on the paper card. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. On the bottom of the image it has the name "CHIEF JUSTICE TANEY".
