This is a cool looking original Civil War .44 caliber Colt revolver. These guns are better known to collectors as the Civil War "Army" model revolver. They were a weapon of choice for most branches of the service during the War. This one has serial numbers of 94,950 including the barrel wedge. By the serial numbers, it has the factory markings of "IE" signifying that this gun was special and was to be fitted with Ivory grips and was also to be engraved. Across the top of the barrel it has the Colt maker's mark along with the New York City production location. These guns were made in Hartford, Connecticut with the sale office being located in New York City. As you can see it has a pretty silver color all over with a later silver plating. The metal parts all have the classic Gustave Young Germanic style vine type scroll engraving. Young was one of the premier detailers of his time and his work is cherished by collectors. The hammer has trademark wolf’s head engraving. The action of the gun work on the positions but it isn't a smooth action. There is still very small trace amounts of the original cylinder scene of the naval battle still visible. This scene shows the naval battle between the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. On the side of the frame and also on the cylinder you can see the clear "COLTS PATENT" mark. On the handle of the gun the 1-piece Ivory grips. The ivory has numerous grain cracks and has a very pleasing golden tone to the ivory. They really make the gun stand out from most of the ones that you encounter.
