REBEL REBEL! Confederate Made Percussion Cap Bop with Cast Brass Finial
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a wonderful untouched Civil War artifact. This is the small leather box that was designed to hold the percussion caps for the soldier's pistol, musket or carbine. What is neat about this one is that is a Southern made version of the box. When you look at the simple construction of the box compared to that of the Northern made cap boxes it is clear to see this one would have never made it out of a Northern arsenal. It is made of the brown tone leather that has aged to a tan color. Right off the bat you notice that the outer flap is huge and made like a shield. The closure tab is sewn onto the flap with some simple stitches. The tab is present but separated and it is on the inside. The finial itself is a small one that is made of cast brass. The innermost compartment no longer has the material to hold the caps in place was at one time. On the back of the box it has both of the original leather belt loops intact. The are hand sewn in place with a crude but functional look. This is a very cool box that is as Confederate as they come in manufacture and it displays beautifully!
