If you have wanted an original Civil War Confederate used Enfield rifle that you can tell saw service, then this one is for you. This one started out life as the classic three band Enfield pattern military rifle that was imported from England for use by the Confederate soldiers. It has been trimmed down after its military service so it could be used for civilian use. What makes this one special is the markings that let us know it's purely Confederate in usage. On the top of the brass butt plate it has the engraved numbers that are "3823". As you see the buttplate has some damage but it is clearly Confederate marked. According to the Enfield experts this lets us know that this would be of the guns in the 1st group of 10,000 Enfield rifles that were purchased by the Confederacy. It has 1861 dated Enfield lock plate which that has the crown stamp behind the hammer. The mechanics of the lock plate still has spring and still catches crisply on both positions. The barrel is now the trimmed down 26-3/4ths inches in length as it would have been 39 when it left the factory. At the breach of the gun we see the stampings that let us know that it is a .577 caliber size. It has the "*25*25*" which denotes the .577 caliber or as the English call it 25 gauge. The barrel has the rear sight. In more modern times, it as had the barrel band, nose cap and ramrod replaced. It looks nice with the replacements. The stock of the gun has a medium tone color all over. There are some losses to the wood and it was broken at one time through the wrist of the stock. In excellent condition one of these Confederate rifles can bring $6,000. This one is every bit as Confederate for a fraction of the price. This is a very nicely priced Enfield rifle and you know this one was in southern hands during the war.
