Very Rare Confederate Artillery Short Sword Attributed to Mobile
Click on an image to enlarge
This one is a keeper! This is in original short pattern artillery sword and scabbard. This is the version is believed to have been made in Mobile, Alabama. The sword has an overall length of 25 inches with a blade length of 19 3/4ths inches. It has a wonderful ancient look like it pent 150 years in an Alabama barn. This is an exceptionally rare example of a Confederate artillery short sword. It is thought that this pattern was possibly manufactured in or around Mobile, Alabama. Few of these pattern swords are known and a few are known stamped "C S" on the grip. At the beginning of the Civil War, the South has few armories and few factories capable of producing arms. Several small arms manufacturers began operations across the vast southern landscape. This sword is a product of one of those small southern arms manufacturers that sprang up to fill the needs of the Confederacy. Blade has a slightly raised medial ridge and it narrows sharply near the hilt. The grip has 9 raised ridges in the brass. The pommel is ovoid in form. The sword is missing the scabbard. In my 30+ years in the business, this is only the second one of these that have been able to offer. Don't miss this rare Confederate Gem!
