Here is a neat piece to add to your Civil War Medical or campsite display. This piece is known as a "medical" canteen and they could have been used by the medical department. They were also used as a container for hot water as a forerunner of the hot water bottle. They are kidney shaped and made of a lead soldered tin body. On the side it has the formed tin loop for a handle. It has the original tin spout intact. You can tell that this one was used and isn't just a surplus piece. There are even a few places where it was repaired. This is a great piece of history!
