Civil War Naval Officer's Sword with Etched Blade From Tomes of New York
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a classic original Civil War naval officer's sword. Officially known as the U.S. model 1852 naval officer's sword, this is the style that was worn by naval officers during the Civil War. The blade is full length and you can still see some of the etching on each side with patriotic and other designs. On the base of the back of the blade it has the "TOMES SON / New York" etching. Tomes was an assembler in New York that sold quality edged weapons for the Union during the Civil War. The guard and pommel cap on these naval swords have always stood apart from the normal Civil War officer's sword. It has the bold "USN" in the basket of the guard and the quillion is made like a serpent's head. At the very top of the pommel cap it has the droop wing style naval eagle. If you notice that the brass parts have a beautiful ancient attic tone to the metal. This one has the original sharkskin grip present on the handle with a pleasing look all over. It also has double twist copper wire. The sword is accompanied by an original leather and brass scabbard but it is not a naval scabbard. It si one from a foot officer's sword. The scabbard displays well but the stitching along the top of the scabbard has separated as you can see and it is priced accordingly. It is a fine displaying Civil War naval officer's sword that doesn't cost a fortune!
