Massachusetts Fore and Aft Chapeau Hat From The 1870's
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a beautiful original chapeau style fore and aft hat from just after the Civil War. The hat is identical in construction to the higher-quality ones of the Civil War but we know it is slightly post because of the makers label and the button. On the inside of the hat it has the silk with the label that has the retailer's Mark of the firm of Bent and Bush of Boston, Massachusetts. it also has the soldier's name of C.H. Russell. The hat itself is constructed of the folding beaver material. This fine quality officer's chapeau is complete with ostrich feathers, gold bullion hat cords, gold bullion cockade with gold eagle. As you can see, it has a lot of wear but still displays well for the price. On the side, it has the spread wing pattern Union eagle with the stars. below the eagle it has the Massachusetts style crest button that displays beautifully. This is a lot of artifact for $450.00
