Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice original classic model 1860 cavalry officer saber with an etched blade. These were used by cavalry officer's on both sides during the Civil War. This one has the desirable mark of Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia stamped on the base of the blade. Horstmann was one of the premiere suppliers of military items during the Civil War. The blade is full length and has an attractive look with a few shallow nicks from service. What is special about this sword is that the back side of the blade has the Horstmann maker's mark and the front side has the Philadelphia location. The wire on the grip is the original double twist style copper wire that has a very pleasing look as you can see. Under the wire it has the original leather grip intact with a great look all over. The brass guard and pommel have a fine copper tone color to the patina. As you can see the guard and pommel cap have the floral designs which is another trait of the sword being made for an officer and not the regular enlisted man. It is accompanied by the original scabbard that fits like a glove. This is a beautiful cavalry saber & scabbard with the officer's hand guard that will look great in your collection.
