Civil War Era Smaller Size Folding Surgeon's Amputation Saw for Fingers or Toes
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very fine original Civil War era amputation saw. This is the smaller size folding blade that would have been used to remove fingers or toes. We know this one would is earlier in his production because of the multipiece construction. It has the tortoise shell panel handles with multiple piece construction that is in nice condition with a few chips lost to the ages. This multi-piece handle is a classic trait of a Civil War era saw because the doctors didn't know that bacteria would build up between the pieces of the handle. After the Civil War they went to a solid 1-piece construction to help prevent infection. The blade of the knife measures 3-1/2 inches in overall length and folds into the handle like a pocket knife. The entire piece measures 8-1/4th inches in length when the blade is folded out. It is a nice smaller-size piece that would surely turn a good day into a bad day very quickly. The This is a wonderful piece of Civil War era medical history.
