This is a fantastic Confederate relic! It is an original leather cap box that held the soldier's percussion caps for his pistol, rifle or carbine. This one has he leather closure strap that is part of the outer flap intact. This is the style that has the inner flap and has the "ears" on the outer flap that keep the caps inside. One ear is still attached and the other is inside. The inner compartment has the classic Confederate lead finial intact and in superb shape. The Union counterparts had brass or copper finials. Almost all of the Southern produced cap boxes have the lead finials because it was easier to find lead that it was brass or copper. On the back of the box it has one of the two hand made thin belt loops the Southern boxes sometimes utilize. The belt loops were held in place by the stitching instead of the rivets. This one is very nice all the way around and is 100% Confederate!
