Cool Looking Enfield Pattern Volunteer Rifle by Ingram of Glascow
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool looking gun! This is the pattern of gun that is known to collectors as a "Volunteer Rifle". Volunteer rifles are designed like the classic 2 band Enfield rifles. This one has the full-length 33 inch barrel and has been bored out to smoothbore .61 caliber size. The barrel has the original front sight intact as well as the long range rear sight. Along the top of barrel it is engraved "C. INGRAM 100 UNION ST. GLASGOW". The Ingram's were the oldest gunmaking firm in Glasgow. The barrel has been reblued in modern times. The tang of the barrel is ornately engraved as are the triggerguard, lockplate and nose cap. The lock is engraved with the "C. INGRAM" in front of the hammer. The mechanics of the lock still catch well on both positions. On the underside of the gun it has one of the sling swivels remaining. If you notice, the buttplate on the gun is copper instead of the usual brass. It has an original ramrod under the barrel that was trimmed down from a standard three band Enfield ramrod. The stock of the gun has a beautiful look and is as high quality as the rest of the gun. It as the ornate checkering at the wrist as well as between the lock and rear barrel band. On the top of the wrist, it has the inlaid silver oval with the initials "JA" engraved in the center. This is a cool gun!
