Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice looking original Civil War cavalry saber. This is the model 1860 cavalry saber referred to by collectors as the light cavalry because of the lighter weight and more streamlined design compared to the earlier model 1840 cavalry saber. On the base of the front of the blade are the stampings of the production date of "1863". When they stamped the sword, the inspector initials of "D.F.M." along with the "US" mark that let us know the sword was approved for Government service. On the back of the blade you can see the maker's mark of "EMERSON & SILVER" and "TRENTON, N.J." Emerson made many quality edged weapons like this one during the American Civil War. The blade is full-length with a nice medium color. The complete original scabbard accompanies the sword. It has both of the rings and mounts intact as well as the original throat and drag. The scabbard has an attractive medium mottled tone to the metal. The guard and pommel cap have an attractive dark tone to the brass. On the top of the pommel cap are the inspector initials of "D.F.M" which are those of the inspector Dexter F. Mossman. The original brown tone leather is about 95% intact with the double twist brass wire intact and it has an attractive appearance. This is a very attractive sword for your Civil War display.
