Beautiful "US" Etched Blade Civil War Cavalry Officer's Saber With Scabbard
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice original classic model 1840 cavalry saber with an etched blade. These were referred to by the soldiers as the "Wristbreaker" due to their massive size and construction. This one has the full length blade and has an attractive look with the original engraving on each side with the floral and patriotic designs. The front side of the blade has the eagle design in the center with the small "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto that means "OF MANY ONE". The back of the blade has the large letter "US" etching. At the base of the blade, it has the maker marking of "P.D.L.". This is the marking of the high quality sword made P.D. Lunesschloss. The handle of the sword has the original sharkskin grip intact with a great look all over. It also has the original spring style twisted wire with the single strands flanking the spring wire. The brass guard and pommel have a fine dark color to the patina. As you can see the guard and pommel cap have the floral designs which is another trait of the sword being made for an officer and not the regular enlisted man. It is accompanied by an original scabbard that fits like a glove. The scabbard has the original mounts, rings, drag and throat intact with a nice dark attic patina all over. This is a very good looking cavalry saber & scabbard with the officer's etched blade that will look great in your collection.
