Here is a merchant note from Alton, New Hampshire. This one was issued by J.Jones & A.H. Sawyer for the amount of 25 cents. It has the printed date of October 18th 1862. Jones and Sawyer were merchants in Alton. Alonzo Havington Sawyer (1827-85) served as Alton's postmaster during Lincoln's administration.A penned endorsement of David Sawyer is found on the back, along with a postal-like rubber stamping with the November 6th date. The note measures 4 inches by 2-1/8th inches. It comes in an acid-free holder for display and preservation.
