Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a neat note issued from Mobile, Alabama. It was issued by the Washington & New-Orleans Telegraph Company. This is a historically important piece because this 10ยข note was issued by one of two telegraph companies that served the South during the Civil War. It was issued in June, 1862, slightly over a month after the company's namesake southern terminus had fallen to a Union naval task force. The Washington & New Orleans Telegraph Company was formed in 1846, the creation of Amos Kendall, former Postmaster General (1835-40). These notes were receivable in payment of messages and bills or were redeemable in Confederate notes when presented in multiples of $5. It is in well worn but attractive condition. It measures 5 inches by 2-1/4th inches. It comes in an acid-free holder for display and preservation.
