Excellent Original 1856 Dated Porter Slave Tag From Charleston
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a historic piece of Americana. It is an original slave tag. These copper tags were issued by the City of Charleston, South Carolina. They were proof that the slave tax had been paid by the owner. You see tons of fakes out there but this one is superb and 100% original in all regards. It has a brown tone patina to the metal with a wonderful copper tone to the metal. It measures 2 inches by 2 inches in overall size. The front of the tag has the stamped wording of " CHARLESTON" at the top with the tag number "794" stamped below. At the bottom of the tag it has the date of issuance of "1856" stamped and above that it has the occupation of the slave which was "PORTER". This amazing piece of history was recovered a few years back on private property in Charleston, South Carolina. This is a tough to find piece of history from the antebellum South.
