1864 Dated Ames Mfg. Civil War Cavalry Saber With The Original Scabbard
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very nice original Civil War dated cavalry saber. This is the classic model 1860 that was carried by the Union cavalryman during the Civil War and is the style most people associate with the war between the states. The sword has a full-length blade with a clear production date of 1864 stamped at the base. You can also see the "US" mark marking and the inspector initials of "J.C.W.". These are the initials of James C. Watson, that inspected the sword blade for the U.S. Government. The back of the blade has only the very faintest traces of the desirable maker's mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the foremost maker of Civil War swords and sabers for the Union government. The guard and pommel cap have a great color and look to the brass. On the top of the pommel cap it has the "J.F." initials of the inspector John Ferdinand. The original leather is present on the handle. The wire wrap on the handle is original and it has a fine look. It is accompanied by the original scabbard. The scabbard has the rings, mounts, drag and throat intact. This is a nice looking authentic 1864 dated Ames cavalry saber and scabbard.
