This is a neat original Civil War staff & field officer's sword. This is the classic style that was worn by high ranking officers of the Civil War. These swords are easily distinguished from the foot officer's swords because of the "US" lettering in the basket of the hand guard. This one has a dark attic tone patina color to the brass parts. The blade is full-length at 31-3/4th inches. The blade still retains a nice amount of the ornate etching on each side of the blade. The back side of the blade has the "US" in the center along with and floral designs. Along the spine of the blade it still has the remnants of the Klingenthal Arsenal Mark. Also at the base of the blade it has the pair of stamp marks from the Arsenal as well. As you can see with this sword they made a quality piece for the well-to-do Union officer's to use. On the front side of the blade it has the floral and patriotic designs with the "EPLURIBUS UNUM" banner. On the handle of the sword it has about 50% the original grip intact. This is the high quality version that has the sharkskin grip instead of leather. The skin has a rich gray color from age as you can see. It still has the original double twist brass wire. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. This is the scabbard style that is made of brass and metal. The brass has a well worn look all over. The scabbard still has the original drag, mounts and rings and throat are still present and accounted for. This is a very nice looking maker marked Civil War staff & Field officer sword and scabbard.
