Original .69 Caliber Springfield Pattern Civil War Cartridge Box
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice looking piece for the price! It is an original Civil War cartridge box for the .69 caliber rifles. This is the larger size box that would hold the larger .69 caliber cartridges. It has the slits in the leather where a cartridge box plate would have been at one time on the outer flap. When you open up the outer flap you are greeted by the implement compartment is present on the innermost area and that flap is present as well. On the innermost area it has both of the original tins present. These tins are what would have actually held the cartridges in place on the soldier's side. Both of the roller buckles are present on the bottom of the box. The brass finial is solidly intact on the bottom of the box but the closure tab is missing in action. On the back of the cartridge box it has all four of the belt and shoulder strap loops still present. You can see that this box was used but never abused and surely saw service during the Civil War!
