Rare Version .69 Caliber Military Gun by P.S. Justice of Philadelphia

This is one of the coolest and oddest muskets that we have ever been able to offer. At the outbreak of the Civil War the Union was in dire need of muskets and this is one of those muskets. In Flayderman's he states it well. He says that "..the Justice arms represent a sincere attempt to answer the Union's severe demands for military arms. Justice's deliveries were among the fastest from any American manufacturer during the war years." This is one of those early guns. The gun doesn't fall into any particular category of weapon as it is made up using some new and some old parts so they could get the gun right into service. These scarce muskets were assembled using US Model 1816, 1840 and 1842 musket parts that had been condemned and the Moller book estimates that no more than 400-800 of these guns were produced. It has the full length 39 inch barrel that is marked with the Justice maker mark and Philadelphia production location. At the breech, it has the original long base US 1855 pattern tangent leaf sight similar to those used on some Whitney "Good & Serviceable" rifles and muskets. You can see that it has the model 1842 style nose cap and barrel bands. Inside the barrel it has a fine amount of the rifling. Flayderman notes in his book that the rifling was a simple design of "3 shallow grooves". The lockplate is a reused model 1842 Springfield. Behind the hammer you can see the very faint traces of the Springfield Arsenal Mark. It still has the original Springfield stamped Union eagle and the maker's mark that reads "P.S. JUSTICE PHILADA". The action still works crisply on all positions. Underneath the barrel it has the Tulip style ramrod of the model 1861 pattern in the channel and it appears to be the original ramrod for the gun. The stock on this gun is a beauty. It is a very high quality piece of walnut with a beautiful tone all over. This is a very cool gun and is definitely one that your friends aren't likely to have.
