This is a neat looking Confederate sword with a lot of character! It is an original Confederate cavalry saber. It is the unmarked style that is referred to by collectors as the "
Dog
River" pattern. These classic swords were patterned after the
U.S. model 1840 cavalry saber that was better known as the "Wristbreaker" cavalry saber. The Confederate swords are easy to tell apart from the
U.S. swords because of the simple, crude and efficient manufacture traits compared to the finely crafted swords of the North and Europe. The blade is hand forged with the single fuller groove down each side of the blade. This blade is still full-length and measures 35 inches in length with a mottled gray tone all over. The handguard is made of brass with a copper content that gives it a very pleasing look all over. It almost has the look of a North Carolina product with a pointed hand guard and smooth sided pommel cap. The handle of the sword is a museum quality restoration wrapped with leather and the single strand iron wire added for display purposes. The sword is accompanied by a Confederate made scabbard. The scabbard has the iron body with the brass for the throat, mounts, rings with an iron drag. It is an attractive authentic Civil War Confederate cavalry saber and a cool piece of Civil War history!
