This weapon has a good look all over! It is an original Civil War Merrill patent cavalry carbine. In Flayderman's guide he states that there were only 14,495 of these guns made. This is the classic style that was carried during the Civil War. This is the earlier model style that is made with the patchbox in the stock. The markings are consistent with the first model but is one of the later ones. It has the serial number of 12,480 on the breech cover just as it should. The gun has a wonderful ancient look all over. The lock mechanics work crisply on all positions. On the side of the lockplate it has the factory markings of "J.H. MERRILL BALTO. PAT. JULY 1858 APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61". The rear sight that doubles as the clip that holds the breech lever in place is present and this is almost always missing or replaced. This one is the 2nd model without the knurled sides. On this breech lever it has the correct marking still visible. It would read "J.H. MERRILL BALTO. PAT JULY 1858." The brass on the barrel band, triggerguard and buttplate all have a deep honey colored brass patina all over. The barrel is full-length with the original front sight intact. The stock has a fine grain to the walnut wood. On the flat of the stock it has the remnants of the inspector cartouche stamp. This is a pleasing looking Civil War Merrill Cavalry Carbine.
