When was the last time you saw one f these rare jewels offered' This is the leather cartridge box for the U.S. model 1855 pistol carbine. The gun is tough enough to find but these boxes are ten times harder to locate. It is the pattern listed and described on pages 386 and 387 of the Edwards Scott Meadows book, U.S. Military Holsters and Pistol Cartridge Boxes. This one is in wonderful well worn shape. It has just enough wear to know it saw service but was never abused. The outer flap is unadorned as they were made without the cartridge box plates that most of the boxes of the day sported. Somewhere along the line, it has had a skin from a small size 1839 pattern cartridge box plate added to the flap. It is loose on one side but displays well. It still has the original closure tab present on the flap and the brass finial is attached on the bottom of the box. On the back of the box it has both of the original leather belt loops intact. When you raise the outer flap you are greeted by the inner flap as well as the original implement compartment that is still nicely intact. The inner flap has the maker marking of H.A. Dingee of New York. On the innermost compartment it has both of the single tin intact. These tins are where the cartridges would have been held during service. This is just a great original and quite scarce Civil War cartridge box in fine shape.
