Here is a great looking piece of headgear from the early part of the Civil War. These hats were popular in the early days of the war before they realized they weren't function because of the style of construction. They are officially known as the U.S. Model 1851 artillery shako. The front of the hat from the visor to crown stands 5-7/8ths inches tall. It has the classic Model 1851 blue wool body on the shako with tarred leather visor. It has the chin strap with the 2 brass eagle buttons on the sides. The buttons have the "I" button for the infantry branch of service. On the top of the hat it has the blue infantry pompom that has an approximate diameter 2 1/4th inches. On the front of the hat it has the 1 3/4 x 2 1/2 inch size Model 1851 die-struck brass eagle hat insignia. It also has the 2 1/16 x 1 1/2 inch die-struck brass wreath and in the center it has the silvered company letter "B.". When you turn the hat over you see the majority of the original sweat band. This is a cool looking hat that you can tell saw service and displays well.
