This is a very attractive original autograph document signed by the Governor for the state of Virginia and Confederate General during the Civil War, Henry Alexander Wise (December 3, 1806 – September 12, 1876) . Henry Wise was born in Drummondtown, Virginia on December 3rd 1806. He was a strong supporter of states rights. One of this well-known acts as Governor was the trial and execution of John Brown. At the outbreak of the War he was appointed a Brigadier General int he Confederate Army. The document is a preprinted militia appointment with fine black ink and has the blanks filled in using beautiful old Brown ink. As you can see it has the beautiful applied seal of the great state of Virginia with the pale blue color. It is vividly signed by Governor Wise. The appointment is for Hugh Rogers. The information posted states that Hugh Rogers lived near Middleburg and served during the early days of the Civil War with the 8th Virginia Infantry. The autograph is beautifully framed and matted in a wooden frame that measures 17 inches by 14 inches in overall size. This commission is dated from February 12th 1859 and appoints Rogers as a Major in the 132nd Virginia Militia. It also has a printed biography of his service. It also has an original CDV image of Wise in a fine suit of clothes with the desirable Anthony backmark on the card. The appointment paper that this autograph is on measures 9-1/2 inches by 6-3/4th inches in the matting. It is ready to hang on the wall of your relic room.
