This is an original ink autograph of a very important figure in the Confederate service. This is the image of Matthew Fontaine Maury. Matthew Maury was born on January 14, 1806. In 1825 he joined the United States Navy to follow his lifelong passion for the sea. In 1855, he published his book entitled "Physical Geology of the Sea" which was the 1st extensive and comprehensive book on oceanography. When the Civil War broke out he resigned from the U.S. Navy so he could serve with his home state of Virginia. From 1862 until 1865, he represented the Confederacy as a special agent in England. He purchased ships for use by the Confederate Navy and also invented a system of laying electric mines. After the Civil War he joined the faculty at Virginia Military Institute. He died on February 1, 1873. The autograph is accompanied by a printed biography of his
service as well as a modern Xerox image of Maury. The paper that the
autograph is on measures 4 inches by 2-3/8ths inches in overall size. It is a fine piece of
history!
