This is an authentic example of the signature of Confederate General Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905). He was the nephew of General Robert E. Lee and also a graduate of West Point. He served as Adjutant in Ewell's Brigade and was appointed Brigadier General in August of 1863. He was an important general that had both a brigade and a division of cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout all of the Army's campaigns. He was wounded in the Battle of Winchester, Virginia. After the Civil War he was elected Governor of the state of Virginia and Consul General to Havana in 1896. The autograph is accompanied by a printed biography of his service as well as a modern Xerox image of the General. The paper that the autograph is on measures 3-1/2 inches by 2-1/4th inches in overall size. It is a small note that is dated from September 21st 1864 and says "Please forward to the Bureau of Conscripts." It is signed "W.H.F. Lee" and he adds "Maj. General". The ink is very light but is legible when examined closely. It is a fine piece of history!
