Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice and complete original leather cartridge box for a Civil War pistol. This one has both of the original leather belt loops intact on the back as well as the closure tab and brass finial. On the center of the outer flap it has the "T.J. Shepard" stamp. He was the man that approved the cartridge box for use by the U.S. Military. Below that it has the script style "US" stamping in the leather. You can see traces of the Newark, New Jersey manufacturer, Davy stamped by the rivet on the outer flap. The leather is nice and pliable with an attractive look but has some light flaking here and there. This is the box that would look correct with a 44 caliber or 36 caliber pistol. It measures about 6-1/4th inches by 4-1/2 inches in size. This cartridge box will look correct when displayed beside of any of the major Civil War era revolvers like Colt, Remington or Starr. Nice piece to display with your revolver.
