This is a great looking CDV image of Confederate General John Stuart Williams. Williams was born near Mount Sterling Kentucky on July 10th 1818 near Mount Sterling, Kentucky. During the Mexican War, he served with distinction with the 4th Kentucky Infantry. Before the Civil War he served in the Kentucky House of Representatives. At the outbreak of the war, Williams was commissioned Colonel of the 5th Kentucky Infantry. He achieved the rank of Brigadier General in the Spring of 1863 and given the command of the Department of Southwestern Virginia. He did his best to defend East Tennessee against Burnside in 1863. He was transferred to Georgia to serve under General Joe Wheeler and aided in the defense of Atlanta. After the Civil War, Williams returned to Kentucky and served as a U.S. Senator. He died on July 17th 1898 and is buried in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. The image shows Hill with his classic beard and his uniform from the bust view with the General's collar insignia visible. The card stock is unmarked so it could be sold by any retailer without advertising for the actual publisher. It has the pair of George Washington tax stamps on the reverse with the date of August 17th 1865. This is a fine image of this Southern General.
