This is a cool pair of pieces that I have wanted to own ever since the Tice button book was published. I remember getting the book and thinking how cool this was. Both of these pieces are pictured on page 4 of Tice's button book. He tells how it is a crude mold used for casting button and that the button accompanying it is a product of that mold. This is a field made Confederate copy of one of the rarest and most desirable of all Confederate Civil War buttons and also one of the most beautifully designed. This one is a beautiful Civil War Confederate South Carolina State Seal coat button and is the style referred to by collectors as the "Palmetto Guard" coat button. This one has one of the most beautiful die work strikes I have ever seen on one of these field cast buttons. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." Where most of the ones you see have the blank on the sides of the tree and a few of the will have the "SC" lettering this one has the desirable "CS" lettering which stands for Confederate States. It also has the snake encircling the trunk of the palmetto tree. On the back of the button it has the original integral cast shank is intact and in fine shape. For the last several years, these pieces have been highlights in the award winning South Carolina button collection of Mr. Jerry Kirkland. They are accompanied by his description from his display. It states that they were recovered in Carolina County, Virginia in 1981. This pattern is listed in Tice's button book as SC284G1. This is a beautiful button and mold that definitely stand out in any collection.
