This is a very attractive looking excavated coat size Louisiana state seal button. This is the classic Civil War Louisiana button that has the mother pelican on the face of the button. She is feeding her young below her in her nest. This one has a trace amount of the gold gilt remaining in the recesses. The original back is intact as is the original shank. You can still read the New Orleans backmark from the firm of Hyde & Goodrich. These buttons were made by the Scovill Manufacturing Company just before the Civil War and supplied to the Hyde & Goodrich Company in about 1860. It is listed in Albert's button book as LA3 and in Tice's button book as LA204a. This one was excavated years ago in a Confederate position in Mobile, Alabama. This is a solid button for any collection.
