This is a scarce piece! It is an original U.S. Model 1826 naval Cutlass. These were made by Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut and this one is pure and untouched in ever way. You can no longer see the Starr markings on the base of the front side of the blade. The blade is full-length at 25 inches. The blade has the curve which was an improvement over the earlier 1816 model and also the handle was ribbed for better grip. The blade has the single small fuller on each side of the blade. The hand guard is made of Japanned (black painted) iron that was hand forged. The hand guard has a very pleasing look a with a superb amount of the original paint. The handle of the sword has displays superbly as you can see in the pictures. The U.S. Navy ordered only 2,000 of these swords and they cost $4.25 when it was new. The scabbard is missing in action as they so often are. This is a scarce piece that has a nice pleasing "Untouched" look all over.
