This is a tough to find version of excavated belt buckle. It is an original small size U.S. Belt buckle of the model of 1839. They are often referred to by collectors as the "baby" U.S. because of the smaller size. This nice dug buckle has a perfect set of hooks in the back. The face is just as nice a vividly clear "US". This plate is accompanied by the old brown envelope that it has been stored in for decades by D.R. Landon, the man who excavated the buckle. It states that it was recovered in Manassas, Virginia in September of 1969. This is an attractive original buckle of the style that is tough to find these days.
