Confederate General Gustavus Woodson Smith Autograph with Rank

This is an authentic autograph of Confederate General Gustave Woodson Smith. It is a nice clear autograph of the General and below the name it has his rank of "Major General". Smith was born in Georgetown, Kentucky in 1821. He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1842. He was an Engineer. During the Mexican War he was brevetted three times. He also served as an instructor at West Point. When the Civil War started he was street commissioner in New York City. He was commissioned as a Major General in the Confederate Army on September 19th 1861. He commanded a wing of the Army of Northern Virginia when General Joe Johnston was wounded at Seven Pines. He resigned in January 1863 but his service wasn't over. He went to Georgia where he served as a Major General with the state. He wrote a couple of books after the War. Smith is buried in New London, Connecticut. The autograph is accompanied by a printed biography of his service as well as a modern Xerox image of the General. The paper that the autograph is on measures 3-7/8ths inches by 3/8ths inches in overall size. It is ready to hang on the wall of your relic room.
