RARE! 1862 Dated 50 Cent Note From The Memphis & Charleston Railroad
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very tough note to find. This one was issued from Memphis, Tennessee from the Memphis and Charleston Railroad Company. It was issued for the amount of 50 cents and is dated January 15th 1862. The scrip was good for "Freight or Passage." The Gothic title is along the top and a small train vignette is underneath. The large FIFTY CENTS is across the center. This railroad was in operation from 1857 until 1894, when it was amalgamated into the Southern Railway system after being virtually destroyed and then rebuilt after the Civil War. This railroad was very important during the Civil War. It was one of the locations of battle during the Corinth, Mississippi battle. The railroad was effectively removed as a resource to the Confederacy when Union forces captured Huntsville, AL in early 1862. This note has a pale blue underprint of a passenger train. The note is in circulated condition and comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
