Original Civil War U.S. Cartridge Box Plate Found Near Spanish Fort, Alabama
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an original excavated Civil War cartridge box plate. This is the plate that would have adorned the outer flap of a Civil War soldier's cartridge box. It has the brass face with the "US' lettering. On the back of the plate it has both of the original iron attachment loops still present. It also has a fine amount of the original lead. The lead was to hold the loops intact as well as help to make the plate more rigid for combat. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found in Mobile, Alabama in the Spanish Fort area. This is a nice excavated Civil War era U.S. cartridge box plate.
