Fine Original War of 1812 Era Hand Forged Iron Naval Boarding Pike
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great naval item from the early 1800's. This is an original iron pike. You often hear these referred to as being "trench spears" or "boarding pikes". These were popular from the earliest days of close quarter combat. It measures 18 inches in overall length with the blade making up 7 of those inches. These were mounted to the end of long poles and used for up close combat when the ships were side by side and the sailors were boarding the other ship, hence the name boarding pike. They were also used occasionally by ground troops as a regular spear. This one is in superb shape with nice color all over and has never been cleaned or polished. You can see some of the places where they formed the pike and it left forging marks. This is a neat looking piece!
