Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking original pre-Civil War U.S. soldier's belt buckle. This is the classic style worn by soldiers of the North before and up to the Civil War. It has a wonderful tone to the face of the buckle with a clear "US". On the back of the buckle it has all three of the original belt attachment loops. It has the stud style hooks known to collectors as the "Puppy Paw" style hooks and these are made of copper. As you can see this is a buckle that is a version of the one illustrated on page 299 of the O'Donnell and Campbell buckle book. They note how the stud hooks are on the "S" side of the buckle. In the book they list them as being made from 1847 until about 1855 and that they were made for the enlisted dragoon or riflemen. It is a tough to find version of this buckle. This is a Great looking non-excavated Civil War soldier's U.S. belt buckle with all three hooks. It is on the original Civil War production bridle leather belt that displays well. What a cool looking piece.
