Wow! That's what you think when you first see this one. It is the rare Civil War model 1851 pattern shako style military hat. This one was made for a soldier serving in the military from the State of New York. We know this because it has the stamped brass state seal of New York applied to the front of the cap. Also on the front of t hat, it has the zouave style "KG" stamped brass letters. There is only one regiment listed with the "KG" letter and that is the "Kossuth Guards" who were part of the 59th New York Infantry. The 59th Regiment, New York Infantry was organized at New York City July to November, 1861. It was assigned at various times to various places. and commands. The regiment mustered out June 30, 1865. The original chinstrap is present and is in fine shape. On each side of the chinstrap, it has the pair of small size eagle buttons. The buttons have the "A" in the shield of the eagle that lets us know it was made for an artillery officer. The brim of the hat is made of the tarred leather material and it has a fine look and still has the original border stitched in place. The body of the hat is covered with the pretty blue tone cloth. When you turn the cap over you are greeted by the original sweatband. The majority of the time this is missing but not on this beauty. On the top of the inside it has the original gold label on red silk from the manufacturer. This one is made by the famous firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham in New York City. The remnants of the silk clearly read "SCHUYLER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM / NO. 13 MAIDEN LANE / NEW YORK". Baker was one of the premier makers and retailers of uniform and accoutrement during the timeframe just prior to the Civil War and also during. As you can see this hat displays superbly from all angles. If you have wanted a true Civil War hat, then this beauty is just perfect for your collection.
