This is a superb looking excavated Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Virginia. It has very nice detail to the face of the button with a solid amount of the gilding remaining on the face. This is the tougher to find version with the gold gilding on the face. It makes the detail stand out superbly. The Virginia seal has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". The original back is present with the correct Civil War retailer's mark of the Kent, Paine Company of Richmond. This is a more scarce backmark as well. The shank was missing in action when it was recovered and it has been expertly restored. This is the style listed as figure VA13 in Albert's book and VA222 in Tice's book. This is a fantastic looking dug Virginia button for any collection.
