PUBLISHED! 6th Plate Ruby Ambrotype of a Union Musician With Colt & Knife
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original ambrotype image of a Union soldier from the Civil War. It shows the woolly looking Yankee standing with his arm resting on his bass drum. In one hand he holds the drum baton for the drum. He has on his uniform coat with his forage cap on his head. Around his waist he wears a US belt buckle. One thing that makes this image cool is that tucked behind his belt he has the Colt style revolver and a Sheffield style bowie knife. It is featured on page 164 in Norm Flayderman's wonderful book, The Bowie Knife: Unsheathing an American Legend. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. This means that the image measures approximately 3 inches by 3.25 inches in size. These ambrotype images are done onto a glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. The image comes in a full leatherette case for display.
