.58 Caliber Civil War Production Cartridge Box by Condict of Newark
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice looking piece for the price! It is an original Civil War cartridge box for the .58 caliber rifles. This is the larger size box that would hold the cartridges for the famous .58 caliber Springfield and contract maker made rifles including the model 1855, 1861 and 1863 patterns. It has the beautiful "US" cartridge box plate on the outer flap. The lettering on the boxplate can be seen from across the room. When you open up the outer flap you are greeted by the oval maker's mark of the firm of Stephen H. Condict of Newark, New Jersey. The sides of the inner flap are present. The implement compartment is present on the innermost area. On the innermost area it has both of the original tins present. These tins are what would have actually held the cartridges in place on the soldier's side. Both of the roller buckles are present on the bottom of the box. The brass finial is also present. The closure tab is also present and it displays well. On the back of the cartridge box it has all four of the belt and shoulder strap loops still present. These were designed so they could be used either way by the soldier. You can see that this box was used and surely saw service during the Civil War.
