This is a very nice looking weapon! It is an original Civil War Colt .58 caliber military rifle. This is the classic style of the model 1861 Colt Special Military Rifle. This is the same Colt company that manufactured the most popular revolvers of the day. This one has a crystal clear 1864 production date on the lockplate along with the majority of the Colt maker's mark and Hartford, Connecticut production location. The action works crisply on all positions. The barrel is full length with the remnants of the inspector initials on the breech. The original front sight intact and the rear sight is a modern made replacement of the correct style. The rifling is shot out of the barrel all the way down with a dark color just like the rest of the gun. The stock is very nice on this one. It has an attractive darker tone grain to the walnut. When these Colt muskets left the Colt factory in Hartford all of the metal parts were bright finished with the only thing that was blued on these guns was the trigger and the rear sight. This gun has a very pleasing look all over.
