This is an attractive original 1865 dated Civil War Artillery saber and scabbard. This one has a fine full-length blade with nice date and inspector marks at the base. The front of the blade has the "US" mark as well as the inspector initials of "J.F.". This is the initials of the man who inspected Civil War swords for the Government. You can also clearly see the stamped "1865" Production date. On the back side of the blade it has the scroll style maker's mark of "AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS." Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a great golden color to the brass. On the handle of the sword, the leather grip has an ancient look and the double twisted brass wire is original and tightly in place and it has a superb look. The sword is accompanied by the original metal scabbard with both mounts intact as well as the throat at the top. When you look at the drag of the scabbard, blade and handguard you can see the "J.F." Inspector's initials. These are the initials of the Ordnance Department inspector. The sword guard and scabbard have the matching "55" numbers stamped into the metal. This is a great looking Civil War artillery saber with scabbard and it has a nice late Civil War production date.
