Here is a beautiful looking note. This is a piece of $2.00 currency was issued by the Merchants Bank of Virginia in Lynchburg, Virginia and is marked as such along the center of the note. The bank was authorized in 1851 and operated as a free bank until 1861. After the start of the war, the bank continued issuing unregistered circulation. The bank is seen listed in reports as late as 1863 but in all likelihood did not survive the financial upheavals at the end of the war. This note was issued early in the war just two weeks after Virginia seceded from the Union and were printed by the local newspaper office. Ironically, the newspaper survived the war while the bank did not. It has the printed issue date of May 1st 1861. The note depicts the image of the seated sailor by the dock in the upper left and the Union eagle in the lower right. It is made with the blank back which is known as it being "Uniface". The note is in circulated condition all over as you can see. Don't miss your chance to own this interesting note. The note measures 6-1/2 inches by 2-7/8ths inches in size. It comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
