Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice displaying original 1860 dated $5 note from the State Bank of South Carolina. It is hand signed and numbered as it should be with this style of note. The scene in the center is one of the corner buildings that still stand in downtown Charleston. It has the red ink number "FIVE" overprinting on both sides. This was added by the printer to help prevent counterfeiting of the currency. With the pre-Civil War date of the note that was almost surely used by a Confederate soldier somewhere along the line. The overall size of this note is 7-1/4ths inches by 3 inches. This note is in attractive circulated condition. You can see where the ink signatures were acidic and have eaten through the paper over the years. It comes in an acid free holder for preservation and display.
